Bringing your car into Canada

According to Canada Border Services regulations, you can bring a car to Canada duty and tax free as long as it is for your personal use. Different rules regarding tax and duty apply to exotic sports cars and limited edition models.   The car must also comply with Canadian standards published by Transport Canada.

When you enter Canada on a work permit, you are not required to bring your vehicle up to Canadian standards, however, the vehicle cannot be sold or otherwise disposed of and cannot remain in Canada beyond the time period specified on the work permit.

You can bring your car into Canada permanently at the time when you enter the country on your work permit, or you can wait until you become a permanent resident and go through the required processes at that time, for further information check with the Registrar of Imported Vehicles

The U.S. customs requires three business days notice of all vehicles leaving the country permanently. A clear title (not encumbered by loans) is required.
