Steps to Work Permit Renewal (Extend your stay in Canada)

*** As of  April 2010 the processing time for work permit renewals was 58 days***

If you obtained your initial work permit with an HRSDC confirmation letter (LMO), you will need to obtain a new one. To initiate the application for the LMO, contact Chris Berga (ext. 74018) in the Office of the Principal.

NOTE: while in the past LMO letters could be renewed, HRSDC now requires a new application. You have a better chance of receiving a new LMO letter if your application for Permanent Residence has been submitted.

Details on the process of renewal (application forms, guides) are on the CIC web site.

You can now submit your application electronically. This is the recommended method as it is significantly faster.

Processing times for the renewal of a work permit with the same employer are provided on the CIC web site , under "CPC Vegreville", Work Permits/Same Employer.

You will also have to renew your OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) number when your work permit expires.

If you do not maintain your immigration status in Canada, Queens cannot pay you. If you have applied for extension of your status and have not received the decision from Citizenship and Immigration, you can continue to be paid as you are deemed to be under "implied status".
