Social Insurance Number (SIN)

The SIN is a nine digit number that you need to work in Canada. Without it, Queen's cannot pay you. You can't apply from outside Canada.

To apply:

It normally takes about 3 weeks from the date of your application to receive the SIN card in the mail. If you need the number immediately to get paid, explain that you need the SIN for payment of salary. If your documentation is in order, you'll get a Social Insurance Number on the spot.

If your SIN has expired:

If your SIN starts with a 9 it will have an expiry date. Click here to find out how to reapply. There is no cost for a new SIN.
