Queen's University

Obtaining a subsequent LMIA

Did you obtain your initial work permit with an LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment), formerly known as Labour Market Opinion, LMO?

If so, you will need a new LMIA before you can renew your work permit.

The LMIA application process has to be initiated by Queen's. It usually takes about 2-3 weeks to complete, submit and receive a decision from ESDC (Service Canada). These timelines can change unexpectedly.

ESDC processing officers usually ask if the applicant has made application for Permanent Resident status before issuing a positive  second LMIA.

If you have not already applied for Permanent Resident status, ESDC will require the University to re-advertise the position you are holding to ensure that there are no qualifying Canadian or Permanent Resident applicants.

To start the process of a subsequent LMIA or discuss your situation, please contact Monica Stewart , Faculty Recruitment and Support Program.
