Keren is an Assistant Professor and Queen’s National Scholar in the Department of Film and Media, where she teaches interdisciplinary courses on cultural and performance studies, labour and precarity in the creative industries, and media and performance. Her research examines the cultural politics of performance and includes publications on participatory modes of spectatorship, the staging of cities in the promotion of place, and grassroots art-activism in, and beyond, the scene of festivals and mega-events. Her recent co-edited issue for the journal PUBLIC (53, 2016), MEGA-EVENT CITIES: Art, Audiences, Aftermaths, includes an autoethnographic account of her auditions for the London 2012 opening ceremonies. She is the author of the forthcoming Theatre & Festivals (spring 2018) and co-editor of Sustainable Tools for Precarious Times: Performance Actions and Rights Emergencies in the Americas (with Natalie Alvarez and Claudette Lauzon, Palgrave 2019). Keren has written for Canadian Theatre Review, Theatre Journal, Theatre Research International, Contemporary Theatre Review, and Performance Research. She has published numerous interviews including conversations with visual artist Neville Gabie, socially-engaged artist Liz Crow, and most recently, theatre director Ivo van Hove and Toneelgroep Associate Artistic Director Wouter van Ransbeek (the latter which will appear in Ivo van Hove: From Shakespeare to David Bowie, co-edited by Susan Bennett and Sonia Massai, 2018). Keren has served as editor of Performance Research’s reviews section (2012-2016), expanding its remit to include analyses of protest movements, memoirs, and art exhibitions. Before joining Queen’s, Keren was a Banting Fellow at Simon Fraser University and a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow at Queen Mary, University of London. She is affiliated with Queen’s Cultural Studies Graduate program and welcomes working with students engaged in practice-based research.
