Keren Zaiontz is Queen’s National Scholar and Assistant Professor in the Department of Film and Media and the Cultural Studies Graduate Program. Two of her primary sites of research are performing arts festivals and mega-events. These cultural sectors are increasingly the stage for a range of social struggles that shape the very parameters of urbanization, including housing, labour, and human rights issues. Her work traces the intersections between equality of opportunity and civic life across the overlapping areas of urban performances studies, contemporary performance, and art-activism.

Keren’s publications include articles in Theatre Journal, Theatre Research International, PAJ: A Journal of Performance and Art, and Performance Research. Her co-edited collections include Reluctant Texts from Exuberant Performance (Borealis Press, 2008) and Performing Adaptations (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2009). Her more recent editorial collaborations include special issues on the cultural politics of mega-events for the journals Contemporary Theatre Review, Canadian Theatre Review, and Public (forthcoming, Spring 2016). Keren is currently writing a book for Palgrave Macmillan’s Theatre& series, Theatre & Festivals, and editing an anthology with Natalie Alvarez, Sustainable Tools for Precarious Subjects: Performance Actions and Human Rights (also with Palgrave). She is editor of Performance Research’s reviews section.

Before joining Queen’s, Keren was a Banting Fellow at Simon Fraser University and a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow at Queen Mary, University of London. She also worked as Lecturer at Roehampton University (London, UK). Keren has been awarded the Canadian Association for Theatre Research Heather McCallum scholarship, the Performance Studies international (PSi) Routledge Prize for research excellence, and was a member of the 2014 Mellon Summer School of Theater and Performance Research at Harvard University. Her dissertation, “The Stagehands of Subversive Spaces: Site-specific Performance and Audience Labour” (2011) was awarded the Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies Alumni Dissertation Award.
