Toronto’s Hot Docs Festival is the largest documentary festival in North America; they are bringing six powerful true-life stories to Kingston in early December for a mini-festival!

Presented by The Screening Room in Partnership with the Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning.

The theme that connects all films in the program is Creativity and the Human Spirit:

  1. Friday December 2 @ 4pm – Spaceship Earth
  2. Friday December 2 @ 7pm – League of Exotique Dancers
  3. Saturday December 3 @ 1:30pm –  Life Animated
  4. Saturday December 3 @ 4pm – Angry Inuk
  5. Sunday December 4 @ 1:30pm – The Missing Ingredient
  6. Sunday December 4 @ 4pm – I am the Blues

For 50 years scientists have been working to understand humanity’s daily influence on our planet’s life forces. Spaceship Earth is a poetic feature film exploring what they have learned, and what that tells us about our responsibility for steering the only ship in the universe known to carry life.

Hot Docs Showcase: League of Exotique Dancers

Friday December 2 @ 7pm
With a blast of brassy jazz and a spin through the glitz of modern Las Vegas, League of Exotique Dancers sets the stage for a provocative and eye-opening “backstage tour” of the golden age of Burlesque through the colourful lives of unforgettable women who made it glitter.

Saturday December 3 @ 1:30pm
Owen Suskind is a young man who was unable to speak as a child until he and his family discovered a unique way to communicate by immersing themselves in the world of classic Disney animated films. This coming-of-age story follows Owen as he graduates to adulthood and takes his first steps toward independence.

Seal hunting, a critical part of Inuit life, has been controversial for a long time. Now, a new generation of Inuit, armed with social media and their own sense of humour and justice, are challenging the anti-sealing groups and bringing their own voices into the conversation.

A Manhattan restaurateur makes the bold decision to boost his struggling eatery's business by putting up the iconic zebra wallpaper made world-famous by the recently shuttered Upper East Side institution, Gino's. His choice sparks controversy when Gino's previous owners, staff and loyal regulars, still hurting over Gino's closing, catch wind of his intentions.

Hot Docs Showcase: I Am The Blues

I Am the Blues takes viewers on a musical journey through the swamps of the Louisiana Bayou, the juke joints of the Mississippi Delta and Moonshine soaked BBQs in the North Mississippi Hill Country. Visiting the last original blues devils, many in their 80s, still living in the American deep south and touring the Chitlin' Circuit.
