Financial Update

How do salaries and benefits fit into the Queen’s budget?

Our total expenditures in 2009-10 are anticipated to be approximately $800 million, depending on the amount of research funding we receive, as well as the amount of donations.

In addition to operating funds, which primarily support academic programming, the University receives:

  • Research funds for specific research projects, which have more than doubled this decade
  • Ancillary funds from Residences, Continuing Education, Parking etc.
  • Trust funds, which include specific purpose grants, donations and endowment income
  • Capital funds (grants and donations) directed specifically to capital projects and renovations
  • Funding through the School of Medicine Alternative Funding Program (SEAMO), primarily used for Clinical Member fees.

The operating budget is projected to be about $360 million. The majority of salaries and benefits are paid out of the operating budget. Chairs are paid from trust funds.

In 2009-10, all employee salaries and benefits are projected to be $275 million or 76% of the operating budget.

It can be misleading to focus on faculty or general staff salaries as a percentage of overall university expenditures when over half of these expenditures must be used for other specific purposes.
