CITY COUNCIL PROCLAMATION

Le Festival de la Francophonie - The Francophone Festival

WHEREAS L'ACFO Mille-Îles is a non-profit organization created in 1976 to promote and support the development (including personal) of approximately 12 000 Franco-Ontarians residing in the Thousand Islands region, which extends from Trenton to the West and Brockville to the East. The activities and projects of ACFO are undertaken by its members and by representatives of the public as well as other Francophone groups; and,

WHEREAS our association is involved on an ongoing basis in all community development aspects and supports all sectors such as education, communications, health, economy and others. Hence, the organization make its presence known to the federal, provincial and municipal government authorities in order to foster the development of the francophone community and assure its continued vitality. It also collaborates with every organization working towards the promotion of the Franco-Ontarian community's interests; and,

WHEREAS the success of the Association rests on the commitment of the volunteers and staff who commonly share the desire to see the French community thrive; and,

WHEREAS the local Francophone community is hosting "The Francophone Festival" on June 20th, 2009; and,

WHEREAS the Francophone Festival is a community driven initiative which is led actively by the Centre culturel Frontenac; our association, ACFO Mille-Îles, is one of the organizations among others involved in making this event possible; and,

WHEREAS the purpose of this event is to foster the cultural identity of the Kingston Francophones through entertainment while sharing their wonderful language to the entire Kingston Community. By hosting this event in the downtown Kingston area the organizers will introduce the French Canadian culture to the entire Kingston Population;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the City of Kingston hereby proclaims June 20th, 2009 as "Le Festival de la Francophonie - The Francophone Festival".
