TA/TF POSTINGS

The first Collective Agreement (CA) between the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) on behalf of Graduate Teaching Assistants and Teaching Fellows and Queens University (May 1, 2010-April 30, 2013) has recently been ratified.  Please ensure you become familiar with all aspects of the collective agreement.  A copy of the agreement can be found on the Office of theProvost and Vice-Principal Academic website (TA/TF Collective Agreement)

Teaching Fellowships will be assigned in accordance to Article 12.04 of the CA as outlined below:

Appointment of Teaching Fellows

12.04    In the appointment to TFships within the bargaining unit, the Employer shall follow the four level preference system outlined below. No TFships shall be offered to candidates in Group B until the qualified candidates in Group A have been exhausted. No TFships shall be offered to candidates in Group C until the qualified candidates in Group B have been exhausted. TFships may only be offered to candidates in Group D when there remain no qualified candidates in any other Group. 

A. First Preference — Group A

Is for qualified graduate students registered as:

(i)     students in a department or program in which the TFship will be offered; or

(ii)    students in an interdisciplinary program with TF budget resources, and for whom the TAship has been granted as part of the funding commitment offered by Queen’s University.

B. Second Preference — Group B

Is for qualified graduate students registered as:

(i)     students in a department or program in which the TFship will be offered; or

(ii)   students in an interdisciplinary program with TA budget resources, and for whom

(iii)   the TFship will not form part of the funding commitment offered by Queen’s University; or

(iv)  there is currently no funding commitment provided by Queen’s University.

C. Third Preference — Group C

Is for qualified graduate students that have previously held a TAship or TFship for the Employer.

D.   Fourth Preference — Group D

Is for qualified graduate students that have not met the criteria as set out in 12.04 A, B, or C.

FRAN 801/3.0 –Reading and Translation French Course for Graduate Students

The Department of French Studies at Queen’s University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates interested in teaching a Reading and Translation French Course for Graduate Students (FRAN 801/3.0) subject to budgetary approval. This is an on-campus, graduate lecture course with an expected enrolment of 40 students. The course is specially designed for students needing to fulfill their graduate program language requirements.  Candidates should be enrolled in a Ph.D programme and have teaching experience at the University level preferably in French Studies.  The Summer Term appointment is for the period of May 1, 2013 to June 17, 2013. 

 

Graduate Teaching Assistants and Teaching Fellows at Queen's University are governed by the Collective Agreement for Teaching Assistants and Teaching Fellows between PSAC Local 901 and Queen's University.Remuneration will be in accordance with the Collective Agreementand appointments are subject to funding or enrolment criteria.

Course description:

 

FRAN-801*

Reading and Translation French Course for Graduate Students


The objective of this course is to develop students’ reading skills in French so that they can fulfill language requirements for graduate work and successfully pursue their professional research interests. Although the course will involve some review of vocabulary (idioms, nuances and subtleties) and grammar, its primary focus will be on comprehension of a wide variety of texts in French through translation and group exercises. This is a non-credit course, graded on a Pass/Fail basis. Summer Term, 5-6 hrs/week. TBA.

FREN 100/6.0 – Français intermédiaire

 The Department of French Studies at Queen’s University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates interested in teaching a course Français intermédiaire (FREN 100/6.0) subject to budgetary approval.  This is an on-campus, first year lecture course with an expected enrolment of 50 students. Candidates should be enrolled in a Ph.D programme and have teaching experience at the University level preferably in French Studies. This is a fall/winter term appointment for the period September 1, 2013 to April 30, 2014, with classes in session from September 9, 2013 to April 4, 2014.

Candidates should be enrolled in a Ph.D programme and have teaching experience at the University level preferably in French Studies.   This is a fall/winter term appointment for the period September 1, 2013 to April 30, 2014, with classes in session from September 9, 2013 to April 4, 2014.

The Department of French Studies at Queen’s University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates interested in teaching Le Cinéma aujourd’hui: Études thématiques (FREN 327/427/3.0) subject to budgetary approval.  This is an on-campus, first year lecture course with an expected enrolment of 40 students. Candidates should be enrolled in a Ph.D programme and have teaching experience at the University level preferably in French Studies. The winter term appointment is for the period of January 1, 2014 to April 31 2014, with classes in session from January 6, 2014 to April 4, 2014.

Course Description:

 FREN 327/427 Le Cinéma aujourd’hui: Études thématiques         3L

A study of cultural representations in contemporary film. Special topics may include women in cinema, culture and identity in French and/or Francophone cinema, history through cinema, avant-garde cinema and the ‘nouvelle vague’. Travaux pratiques include an oral presentation and an in-depth essay.  FREN 327/427/3.0. are given jointly. 



Queen’s University and the Public Service Alliance of Canada have formed a new Collective Agreement for Graduate Teaching Assistants and Teaching Fellows. Teaching Assistant positions within the Department of French Studies are advertised in accordance with the provisions of this Agreement.

For the year 2013/2014 the Department of French Studies may require teaching assistants for the following courses.

 

FREN 118– one position: Fall term (Communication &cultures I)

FREN 118– one position: Winter term (Communication & cultures I)

FREN 219 – Three positions, two for Fall term and one for Winter term (Communications et cultures IV)  

 These positions are conditional upon enrolment figures and budgetary approval. Positions will remain posted until they have been filled (no less than 7 business days) from date of posting.

 TA-ships will not be offered to candidates in Group B, C or D until the qualified candidates in Group A have been exhausted. In addition, we will do our best to match your preference to course offerings.

 First Preference – Group A: for qualified graduate students registered as:

 (i)         students in a department or program in which the TA-ship will be offered; or

(ii)        students in an interdisciplinary program with TA budget resources,

and for whom the TA-ship has been granted as part of the funding commitment offered by Queen’s University.

Second Preference – Group B: for qualified graduate students registered as:

(i)         students in a department or program in which the TA-ship will be offered; or

(ii)        students in an interdisciplinary program with TA budget resources,and for whom

(iii)       the TA-ship will not form part of the funding commitment offered by Queen’s      University; or

(iv)       there is currently no funding commitment provided by Queen’s University.

Third Preference – Group C: for qualified graduate students that have previously held a TA-ship or TF-ship for the Employer.

Fourth Preference – Group D: for qualified graduate students that have not yet met the criteria as set out in A, B, or C.

TAs in French Studies are ‘normally’ two terms, 10 hours per week, therefore if you are applying for a fall or winter course, please provide at least two preferences.

For applicants in groups B please rank your course preferences by term. As well, please include in your application a CV, unofficial transcripts and a one-paragraph statement explaining why you want to TA for a particular course. TAs in French Studies are ‘normally’ two terms, 10 hours per week, therefore if you are applying for a fall or winter course, please provide at least two preferences.

For applicants in groups C and D please rank your course preferences by term. As well, please include in your application a CV, unofficial transcripts, a one-paragraph statement explaining why you want to TA for a particular course and one academic reference. TAs in French Studies are ‘normally’ two terms, 10 hours per week, therefore if you are applying for a fall or winter course, please provide at least two preferences.
