A popular campus green space will be named Matheson Field after Judge John Matheson, an influential figure in the development of national symbols such as the Canadian flag and the Order of Canada. Judge Matheson passed away in December at the age of 96.

“Judge Matheson was an inspiring and remarkable Queen’s alumnus who exemplified the Queen’s spirit and loved engaging with Queen’s students,” says Principal Daniel Woolf. “He was a prominent figure at our home football games right up until last year, and it’s fitting that a popular student space be named in his honour.”

The Board of Trustees approved the naming at its March meeting. The field – bordered by Leonard, Morris and Gordon-Brockington Halls, as well as McNeill House – has never had an official name, though it is often referred to as Leonard Field given its close proximity to the residence.

“The opportunity to officially name the field was very important, and due to its centrality in the life of virtually all of our first year students, it seemed appropriate to name it after an esteemed alumnus truly deserving of this enduring recognition,” says Rector Nick Francis. “It is exciting that each and every incoming class will become acquainted with the memory of Mr. Matheson and his seminal contributions to our country.”

Plans are underway for an official naming ceremony to be held later this year.
