Available Expert - Custody and parenting arrangements during the holidays

Wednesday, December 20, 2017

Queen's University family law expert Nicholas Bala is available to comment on issues associated with custody, access, and parenting arrangements at this time of year. With the holiday season approaching lawyers, mediators, counselors, and judges see a flood of separating and divorced parents attempting to settle a range of issues related to parenting over the holidays.

According to Professor Bala, parents should try to make child-focused holiday plans. What steps should separated parents take to deal with issues around the holidays to increase their children's happiness and reduce stress on themselves? How can grandparents and other family members support parents and children through a time that should be joyful but too often is stressful?

Children often wish most for peace between their parents; are their voices being heard? In some cases, domestic violence may be a concern; are children being adequately protected? Parents who end up in front of a judge are often those who have the most difficulty cooperating; questions may be asked whether they are thinking more about their children or themselves?
