Available Expert - Jagmeet Singh enters NDP leadership race

Wednesday, May 10, 2017

Queen's University labour historian Christo Aivalis is available for phone interviews on reports that Bramalea-Gore-Malton MPP Jagmeet Singh is scheduled to formally declare his candidacy for the federal New Democratic Party leadership at an event early next week. Mr. Singh will be the sixth candidate to officially enter the race, which currently includes Members of Parliament Charlie Angus, Niki Ashton, Guy Caron, and Peter Julian, as well as former Veterans Ombudsman, Pat Stogran.

"Mr. Singh choosing to run will certainly shake up the race, and bring a lens to it that we don't have yet," says Dr. Aivalis."The challenge for Mr. Singh might be in balancing how this campaign will affect his current role in the Ontario NDP. If Mr. Singh loses, one suspects he will remain in provincial office, ready to work towards a 2018 provincial election that people feel the party has a chance in."

Dr. Aivalis adds that the fact Mr. Singh does not hold a federal seat, combined with the lack of local safe seats for the NDP, could also pose a challenge to his candidacy.

Dr. Aivalis is an adjunct professor of Canadian Political and Labour History at Queen's University. His academic research focuses on topics including Canadian Labour/leftist history, as well as the history of Canadian workers, socialists, radical Christians, and liberal intellectuals. He has commented extensively in the past on a range of topics - from public sector labour negotiations to federal party politics.
