Available Expert - Queen's expert explores cultural impact of Disney deal

Thursday, December 14, 2017

Queen’s University film expert Philippe Gauthier is available is comment on Disney making a deal to acquire 21st Century Fox for $52.4 billion. The acquisition will include Fox’s TV and film studios, cable networks such as National Geographic and FX, and international TV businesses.

“Disney has recently played an important role to raise consciousness and to provide role models in popular culture by casting more women and members of minority groups in major roles (Star Wars VII, Rogue One, Moana or television series like Marvel’s Luke Cage and Marvel’s Jessica Jones),” says Dr. Gauthier. “With the acquisition of 21st Century Fox, Disney expands its control over a vast set of already popular intellectual properties, which opens new and exciting opportunities in the near future. However, we have to stay critical and monitor the impact of the Fox-Disney deal on the diversity of culture and opinion in the public sphere.”
