Gaels stretch unblemished run to 14

A quick round-up of Queen's Gaels teams in action over the weekend:

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Queen's Gaels women's basketball team stretched their unbeaten run to 14 with a pair of convincing wins over the weekend at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC),.

On Saturday, the No. 4-ranked Gaels (14-0) defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs (3-12) 68-43. Abby Dixon and Andrea Priamo each scored 11 points while Veronika Lavergne added 10 points and seven rebounds.

On Friday, the Gaels crushed the Nipissing Lakers (1-13) by a score of 96-46. Myriam Fontaine led the way with 14 points and Lavergne added 13 with a team-high eight rebounds.

MEN’S HOCKEY

Despite missing four key players competing at the World Universiade, the No. 5 Queen's Gaels men’s hockey team (17-5-2) managed to earn a split in Toronto over the weekend.

On Saturday, the Gaels defeated the University of Toronto Varsity Blues (5-18-2) 2-1. Brock Edwards and Alex Stohart scored for the Gaels.

On Friday, the Gaels lost 4-0 to the No. 6 Ryerson Rams (18-4-1).

Eric Ming, Spencer Abraham, Slater Doggett, Kevin Bailie and head coach Brett Gibson are representing Canada in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

The Queen's Gaels (8-4-6-0) defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs (9-0-8-2) 4-3 in a shootout Friday.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first period, Hailey Wilson opened the scoring for the Gaels in the second and Katrina Manoukarakis evened the score in the third. The Voyageurs went ahead again but Jessica Wakefield scored on a penalty shot in the final minute to push the game into extra time.

After two scoreless overtime periods the game was decided in a shootout where Wakefield was the only one to score.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Queen's Gaels men's basketball team (6-8) dropped both of its games on the weekend at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC). The Gaels have now lost seven in a row.

On Saturday, the Gaels 85-64 to the Laurentian Voyageurs (6-9). Sukhpreet Singh had a team-high 21 points while Jesse Graham added 13 points and brother Tanner recorded eight points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

On Friday, the Gaels lost 93-84 to the Nipissing Lakers (7-8). Singh tallied a game-high 29 points, surpassing Derek Richardson for second on the Gaels men’s basketball's all-time scoring list.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Queen's Gaels men’s volleyball team (8-5) picked up a weekend split in Toronto.

On Saturday, the Gaels took down the Toronto Varsity Blues (4-6) in five-sets 18-25, 25-17, 25-22, 19-25, 15-10. Markus Trence set a career high with 24 kills along with three blocks while adding 13 digs. 

On Friday the Gaels were defeated in five sets by the division-leading Ryerson Rams (9-4) 25-21, 25-23, 20-25, 22-25 and 12-15.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Queen's Gaels women’s volleyball team (5-8) visited the No. 2 Toronto Varsity Blues (11-0) Saturday and while they put together a quick start the Gaels were unable to keep pace, losing in straight sets 25-17, 25-17 and 25-12.

Victoria Wensley led the Gaels with six kills while also adding nine digs and two blocks. Sierra Hardy served up one ace and tallied 18 assists.

On Friday, the Gaels lost to the Ryerson Rams (10-3) in four sets 25-21, 20-25, 19-25, 14-25.
