Unusual NetID activity: frequently asked questions

The university’s Information Technology Services (ITS) department has noticed some unusual activity related to employees’ NetIDs 

What happened?

Information Technology Services (ITS) discovered some unusual activity related to employees’ banking information within the Queen’s MyHR portal. To date, a small number of individual accounts have been affected by this activity. In addition, there has been unusual activity related to NetIDs affecting a small group of employees. Queen’s is currently in the process of contacting affected employees.

How many accounts were affected?

There is no indication to date there is a widespread problem across the university. Only a small number of accounts were affected by the incident; however, as a precaution, we are notifying everyone and encouraging all users to take this opportunity to update their passwords.

How do I know if I was impacted?

Queen’s is currently in the process of contacting all known affected employees. If you are unable to log in to your Queen’s account using your NetID and password, please contact the IT Support Center (ITSC) at (613) 533-6666.

What is the university doing in response to this incident?

The university is committed to resolving this situation as quickly as possible. ITS is continuing to investigate and further updates will be provided as they become available. As a precaution, off-campus access to MyHR and PeopleSoft Finance has been suspended. In addition, access to the Pension Self Service has been suspended for all users, both on and off-campus. The Self-Serve functionality within MyHR has been suspended and accounts are currently “read-only”.      

What can I do to protect myself?

All users are strongly encouraged to take this opportunity to update and strengthen their NetID passwords. While we do not believe there is a widespread risk to Queen’s users, changing your password will help mitigate the potential for unauthorized access.

Who can I contact to change my information?

If you need to change your banking information for any reason, please contact Payroll Services at (613) 533-6000 ext 74321.
If you need to update your personal information, please contact Human Resources at (613) 533-2070.
If you are having trouble with your NetID or password, please contact the ITSC at (613) 533-6666.

Is there still a chance my account will be affected?

The university is committed to resolving this situation as quickly as possible. ITS is continuing to investigate and further updates will be provided as they become available. It is important to remember that ITS will never ask for your NetID password. If you receive an email asking you to verify your account, do not click.
