Kathryn Aleong (Artsci’81) is very clear on why she has supported the Geography Department over the years - “Geography doesn’t attract the same kind of financial support as bigger departments but what I learned at Queen’s gave the foundation I needed for my career.”  Having spent 24 years in Canada’s Foreign Service, her career has allowed her to travel, live and work abroad.

Kathryn came to Queen’s from Trinidad, not knowing much about Queen’s or Canada, but she quickly fell in love with the Geography Department. Initially, she chose a degree in Geography and History, with a minor in Geology.  However, she determined that Geography would ultimately provide a wider field of opportunity after graduation, because “I loved having the chance to take classes in the human and physical streams which gave me such a broad range of options,” she said.  She held onto the Geology minor until her first experience of field work revealed just how much ‘roughing it’ such a career might require.

Kathryn is extremely passionate about supporting Geography because of her gratitude for everything she experienced at Queen’s.  “I just found everything so fascinating about humankind’s interrelationship with its habitat and I was able to learn about so many different things.”  She still remembers making it to Dr. W. George Lovell’s 8:30 am lectures despite “really not being a morning person.”

Kathryn has recently taken her philanthropy a step further by including the Geography Department in her Will.  She hopes her gift will make a difference in the lives of future students.
