UNDERGRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: BRAEDEN KLASSEN

Hometown: North Vancouver, BC

Program: Geological Engineering

Current year: 2nd Year

Why I chose Geology:

I love the outdoors, have a fascination with the processes that shape the world and appreciate the challenge that geology brings.

Student involvement/extracurricular activities I am involved with:

  • Orientation Leader for the Engineering Faculty (FREC)
  • Member of the Queen’s Baja SAE
  • Member of Queen’s Outdoor Club

The professor(s) or course which has influenced me the most so far:

Prof. Hanes captivated my interest while in first year engineering geology (APSC 151). He helped explain what a Geo-Eng program can look like, and what it takes to excel. His advice greatly solidified my decision to join geology. I don’t regret it for a second.

Most memorable Queen’s experience so far:

I gotta say driving to El Paso, Texas, with the Baja Team for a design competition. We had plans to rotate drivers and do it in one drive (~35 hours), but the rental car broke down and we had to spend a night in Missouri. The whole trip was fantastic – great group of friends to be with.

After I graduate, I:

hope to pursue my P. Eng., most likely by working with a geotechnical firm in Western Canada. I’d like to become involved in Arctic work, whether that be mining or infrastructure related.

One big goal I’d like to accomplish during my lifetime:

Travel and explore. Start with Canada – maybe an east-north-west coast tour – then dip south. I’d love to see Patagonia one day.
