Grad Students Receive Student Research Grants

Congratulations to Graduate students Svieda Ma, Renaud Soucy La Roche, and Mark Ahenda for each receiving a 2017 Student Research Grant from the Geological Society of America (GSA).

In addition to the GSA research grant, Svieda Ma was also awarded a Mineralogical Association of Canada (MAC) research grant for her work on the Bathurst fault. Collectively, the students brought over $10,000 of research funding to the Queen’s Tectonics Research Laboratory.

The titles for their respective proposals are as follows:

Mark Ahenda: U-Th/Pb monazite geochronology of exhumed metapelites in the Gurla Mandhata core complex, NW Nepal

Sveida Ma: Timing of the Bathurst fault via chemical dating of in situ monazite

Renaud Soucy La Roche: The effects of inherited basement structures on the geometry of the main Himalayan thrust and the exhumation of the Greater Himalayan sequence

A full list of research grant recipients is posted in this month's issue of GSA Today.

Congratulations, all!
