Welcome Alexander Braun!

Dr. Jean Hutchinson, Department Head, is delighted to announce that Dr. Alexander Braun joined the department on July 1st, 2013 as our new Applied Geophysics Professor. Alexander will be teaching our undergraduate geophysics courses and will introduce new graduate level courses to our program. His expertise, energy and enthusiasm will be a wonderful contribution to the faculty team.

Alexander Braun is a geophysicist by training and received both his Diploma and Dr. phil. nat. degrees in geophysics from the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt/Main, Germany. His thesis and dissertation were in the area of theoretical seismology and geodynamics/gravity.

From 1998 to 2002, he worked for the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam on Satellite mission development and operations. In 2002, he was awarded a Byrd Fellow at the Byrd Polar Research Center of the Ohio State University working on geophysical causes of sea level change. From 2004 to 2009, he became an Assistant, and in 2006, an Associate Professor of Geodesy at the University of Calgary. Between 2010 and 2013, he was an Associate Professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Dallas.

His research focus lies on Earth systems observation and the interpretation of interacting geophysical processes. He has founded three start-up companies which provide geophysical or engineering services.
