GRMN 106*  Germany: A People and its Culture II NOT offered in 2012-2013   Slot: N/A

GRMN 105*-106*, Germany A People and its Culture I and II. These courses offer an introductory survey of German civilization, designed both for students learning the German language and for those with a general interest in political and cultural history. They will count towards all concentrations in German and German Studies. The courses aim to provide students with an outline of the country's political history, but cultural issues will receive equal attention, and the sources and development of the tradition of German illilberalism, which has been charted by historians like Fritz Stern, will be a prominent concern throughout. The first half course will run from antiquity up to 1918, and will include topics such as Protestantism, Romanticism, and the rise of German nationalism. The second part will deal with German history in the 20th century, including the Third Reich, its origins in the aftermath of the First World War, and its legacy during the Cold War and beyond. We shall also discuss topics relating to modern Germany that will be of interest to students intending to visit the country. The course consists of a 3-hour session one evening a week, one hour being devoted to a lecture, one to a discussion of a text from the course book, and one to the showing of a historical film. Evaluation will be based on class participation, a final examination, an essay to be written in class, and a research project. More information on GRMN 105 and more information on GRMN 106
