Dear Queen's Supporter,

Of all the things I've learned in my first year as Dean of the Faculty of Education, the most encouraging is witnessing the tremendous efforts to educate made by teacher candidates, faculty and alumni.Together we are shaping today's classrooms and preparing students for a productive future.

As a Faculty, we strive to give teacher candidates the very best education possible. Through classroom instruction, they benefit from the newest research in areas like making math accessible, understanding how children learn language, and best practices to rank or test students.

Queen's teacher candidates spend a significant amount of time in school classrooms under the mentorship of practicing teachers. This combination of learning and experience offers our teacher candidates the best of both worlds – theory and practice.

New approaches to teaching

Research done right here at Queen's challenges the way we do things, expands our understanding of learning and education, and provides new approaches to teaching.

Dr. Lynda Colgan, for example, is exploring how children understand math. Through her research, she is developing new ways – like her Math Calendar and Mathemagic book – to make math fun, dynamic and compelling, increasing children's understanding of the concepts.

Teacher candidates put traditional and new approaches into practice

As Dr. Colgan and her fellow Queen's researchers develop new teaching methods, they are shared with Queen's teacher candidates.

Armed with traditional and newly developed teaching tools, Queen's teacher candidates apply their lessons to real life situations through their practicums.

Expanding our understanding of teaching and learning, providing teacher candidates with traditional and cutting edge teaching methods, and ensuring they practice their learned theory benefits Queen's teacher candidates and today's school children directly.

Made possible through our gifts

As alumni, your gifts are critical to ensuring Queen's education students continue to enjoy top quality learning both in and beyond the classroom, and that the application of their skills and knowledge continues to improve our children's classrooms.

Each of our curriculum areas are enhanced by supplementary learning experiences. But we can't offer them without your help.

Please, add your support with a gift to the Teaching Excellence Fund today.

Sincerely,

Stephen Elliott
Dean, Faculty of Education
