Did you know Queen's students are studying Gulf tar balls?

This summer, Masters students Jonathan Martin and Julie Adams Jonathan collecting Tar Ballswith Environmental Studies and Biology professor Peter Hodson traveled to the Gulf coast to collect tar balls washing ashore from the oil spill.

Their interest extended beyond helping to clean the white sand beaches. They brought home a collection of tar balls to study their potential impacts on marine life.

With more oil being transported every year the frequency of accidents is increasing, but little is known about the environmental risks of oil after it weathers to tar balls.

Jonathan and Julie are helping to define the impacts of spilled oil on fish populations, data that will help to protect the Earth's aquatic ecosystems.

Your gift to the Queen's Annual Appeal is critical to ensuring new discoveries and further innovations. Just as each discovery is pivotal to improving our world and our lives, annual gifts are pivotal to the discoveries.
