A Queen's education is the foundation on which Queen's alumni – like you – build their futures.
Many graduate students at Queen's, like Ian Cameron who did his PhD in neuroscience and Shauna Shiels who is pursuing her master's in sociology, build their education on a personal passion. In turn, their study and research can impact each of us in our own lives.
Ian explores neurological disorders to honour his grandfatherIan became attracted to neuroscience during his final year of undergraduate study. His grandfather had been diagnosed with a neurological disorder, Dementia with Lewy Bodies, a debilitating condition similar to Parkinson's disease which also effects memory and decision-making abilities.
"Watching my grandfather made me realize that we really don't know much about the brain at all," says Ian. "There are so many questions waiting to be answered."
The daughter of an Irish immigrant and a strong Cree woman, Shauna was raised with the traditions of both cultures and is the first in her family to attend university.
"I want to decentre white feminism and open up feminist discourse to include Aboriginal people," says Shauna.
There is very little research on Aboriginal feminism because many Indigenous people reject the term 'feminism' as a Western ideology imposed on them.
With guidance from an Aboriginal elder at Queen's, encouragement from graduate faculty and involvement with the many meaningful communities that make up Queen's, Shauna seeks to represent feminism in a way that the Aboriginal community is comfortable with so they can take part in the discourse.
It is in support of amazing students who pursue their passions just as Ian and Shauna are doing, that we count on the generous support of our alumni.
Through your gift to Graduate Studies, you are providing financial support so that students of exceptional academic standing can participate in the Queen's experience. In turn, they become our best representatives on national and international stages.
As alumni, your gifts are critical to ensuring Queen's students like Ian and Shauna continue to pursue their passions, furthering knowledge in many areas and impacting the lives of people at home and abroad.
They can't do it without you. Please add your support with a gift to the Dean's Award in Graduate Studies today.
With my sincere gratitude and best wishes,
Brenda Brouwer, Ph.D.
