Perhaps the change that has most drastically impacted the way we teach, both in and beyond the classroom, is technology – now fully integrated into our laboratories, studios, classrooms, libraries and student residences across campus.
Through research for her honours thesis, Laura Bartha, Computing'11, is helping in the fight against cancer.
When cancerous tissue or organs are removed, it is important to remove or destroy all the cancer cells. With microscopic cells, the existing tools used in the surgery cannot guarantee that all the cells are removed.
Laura is using position-tracking devices and virtual reality surgical guidance systems to develop an algorithm for a new tool that will help doctors to find certain critical points in an ultrasound image.
Her work is an important part of a larger research project that will help ensure patients who undergo cancer surgery have the greatest chance of complete removal of the cancer and least chance of relapse.
Through the support of your gift to the Arts and Science Dean's Student Resource Fund, we recently piloted on-line delivery of standard course material. The professor of our first-year Principles of Psychology course now records live lectures for students to access online from home or the library.
Just as integrating technology into our classrooms, research, and student life is vital to educating our students so they can better the world, your gifts are vital to ensuring the tools, knowledge and skills our students need are available.
