Dr. Parker (Associate Professor, Latin American History) began his term as the new department chair in July. Dr. Parker's research specialty is urban social history. During the summer months, he continued his research on culture of dueling in Latin America, and gave a talk in Argentina at the Institute of Economic and Social Development on the history of the Latin American middle class.
Dr. Parker succeeds Dr. Richard Greenfield after a long and successful stewardship of the department. Professor Greenfield is on leave in 2009-10 but continues to supervise MA students working on Byzantine history and to prepare an edition and translation of the Greek Life of St. Symeon the Theologian. He and his wife, Dr. Anne M. Foley (Classics), have recently returned from Istanbul, Turkey, where they had been invited to give a talk at Bogazici University concerning their new archeological project on Mt. Galesion near Ephesus.
