Professor Jeff McNairn Awarded Two Prizes

Congratulations to Professor Jeff McNairn who was recently awarded two prizes for his article, ‘“The common sympathies of our nature”: Moral Sentiments, Emotional Economies, and Imprisonment for Debt in Upper Canada.’ On May 30th, during the annual meeting of the Canadian Historical Association, it was awarded the best article prize by Histoire sociale/Social History; on June 10th, the Ontario Historical Society presented the author with the Riddell Award (pictured here) for the best article on Ontario’s history published in 2016. The essay -- part of a larger project on the legal regulation of economic failure in early Canada – examines how pain and displays of emotion took on heightened moral and political significance in the humanitarian campaign to abolish imprisonment for debt.
