My area of interest is the history of British North America, specifically encounters and interaction between Natives and Euro-Americans during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. My MA thesis examined how processes of state formation and coalescing understandings of Canadian national identity impacted written representations of the Beothuk, Native inhabitants of Newfoundland who were rendered extinct in 1829. Under the supervision of Professor Carson, I plan to expand this research temporally, examining how earlier, arguably more tenuous processes of colonial expansion, state development, and subjugation influenced depictions of Native groups in locally produced histories and travel narratives.
