About

Dr. Vaneesa Cook earned her Ph.D. in May 2015 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she studied U.S. political, intellectual and cultural history. Her dissertation, entitled Thy Kingdom Community: Spiritual Socialists and Local to Global Activism, 1920-1970, examines the religious motivations of leftist radicals, those who believed they could cultivate a socialist society by practicing basic religious principles of fellowship and cooperation in local communities. She has an authored an article “Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Long Social Gospel Movement,” which will appear in the journal of Religion and American Culture in January 2016.
