About

My research interests include tribal histories in colonial South Asia, Gender history , contemporary ethno-nationalisms and identity assertion movements specifically in the North East of India.

My Ph.D thesis, under the supervision of Dr Ishita Pande, concerns the history of the Khasi hills (situated in the North-East of India) and its inhabitants, through examining resistances to processes of colonial reconstitution of the hills in the 19th century. I specifically focus on articulations of Khasi identity through practices of customary laws and the multiple trajectories of codification of a Khasi philosophical and political cosmology into structured religion.

In 2010, I was selected for the International Visiting Research Programme in History at Birkbeck College, University of London which was supported by the Alan Bray Scholarship. My archival work for six months culminated in a research paper titled 'Placing the Tribal: Modernity, Nation and Khasi Identity', presented at the Graduate History Seminar, Birkbeck College.

From January to August, 2011, I have spent most of my time mining the archives and conducting fieldwork in India.
Fall and Winter 2011-12 - I will be teaching two sections of History 122, The Making of the Modern World.
