Curriculum Vitae

About

Allan English served in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) for 25 years in various operational and instructional positions as an air navigator. He completed his MA in War Studies at the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) in 1987 and taught in the Military Psychology and Leadership Department there until he retired from the CAF in 1991. He completed his PhD in history at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario in 1993. His book, The Cream of the Crop: Canadian Aircrew 1939-45 examines the RCAF's selection and training procedures and its policies governing aviators who were judged to have a "lack of moral fibre" (LMF). Dr English has taught courses in the Theories of War, Air Warfare, and Human Behaviour in War at the post-graduate level in the War Studies and Continuing Education programmes at RMC. He has taught extensively at the Canadian Forces College (CFC), Toronto in subjects related to senior officer professional military education and he was Co-Chair of the Aerospace Studies Department at CFC from 2001 to 2005. He completed a number of studies on military culture, leadership, and command and control under contract to Defence Research and Development - Canada, one of which was published by McGill-Queen's University Press in 2004 as Understanding Military Culture: A Canadian Perspective.

In the fall of 2005 the Canadian Defence Academy (CDA) Press published The Operational Art - Canadian Perspectives: Context and Concepts edited by Dr English, Major-General (retired) Daniel Gosselin, Howard Coombs, and Commodore Laurence M. Hickey. The next book in the series, edited by Dr English, The Operational Art - Canadian Perspectives: Leadership and Command was published by CDA Press in 2006. The final book in the series, edited with Colonel James Taylor, The Operational Art - Canadian Perspectives: Health Service Support was also published by CDA Press in 2006. Networked Operations and Transformation: Context and Canadian Contributions, co-authored with Richard Gimblett and Howard Coombs, was published by McGill-Queen's University Press in the fall of 2007. Other related publications are Command and Control of Canadian Aerospace Forces: Conceptual Foundations and Effects-Based Approaches to Operations: Canadian Perspectives (co-edited with Howard Coombs) both published by the CF Aerospace Warfare Centre in 2008. Two of his articles have recently been published in the Canadian Military Journal "Outside Canadian Forces Transformation Looking In" (2011) and "From Combat Stress to Operational Stress: The CF's Mental Health Lessons from the 'Decade of Darkness" (2012).

Dr English is an associate professor in the History Department at Queen's University, where he teaches a graduate course in Canadian military history.
