Throughout my undergraduate studies I examined the development of combined arms operations from its origins in the First World War and into the Second World War.
The theory of combined arms operations was to use infantry, tanks, artillery, and airpower in a supportive system that used the advantages of each arm to minimize the disadvantages of other arms during offensive operations. For example, tanks to protect infantry from machine guns while infantry advance protecting tanks from anti-tank guns while the artillery provided suppressive fire on enemy strong points and artillery. I have examined in detail the Canadian Corps shock troopers during the First World War, the development of German armoured theory (Blitzkrieg), and combined arms tactics during the Normandy Campaign.
At Queen's with Dr. English I am looking to expand on the area of combined arms operations during Normandy and the western European campaigns of 1944/45 re-examining the operations of the Canadian Army.
