About

During my undergraduate degree at Dalhousie I focused on Islamic history and Middle Eastern politics during the Ayyubid Dynasty. It was after completing my thesis on the events leading to the fall of Jerusalem in 1187 that my focus shifted westwards towards the social and legal treatment of the LGBT community during the reign of the Plantagenet kings of Medieval England. My intention is to explore the relative differences in how individuals who expressed these orientations were categorized and understood by their contemporaries depending upon their positions within the social, political and religious hierarchy during this period. It is my hope that through the analysis of ecclesiastical documents, surviving biographies/histories and legal records we will be able to move beyond a depiction of Medieval homosexuality that only reflects the experiences of a privileged royal few in order to include a more diverse and pluralistic account of the wider community at each class level.
