Medieval Mediterranean History
B.A. in History, University of Calgary, 2013
Devon recently graduated from the University of Calgary and looks forward to expanding his knowledge of Mediterranean history at Queen's University. Throughout his undergraduate career he frequently sought out opportunities to research Islamic related topics in otherwise traditionally "European" courses. His most commonly revisited topic was the history of al Andalus, from the details of the Umayyad conquest beginning in 711 CE through to the social, religious and legal relationships of its subjects under subsequent Islamic and Christian states in the Iberian Peninsula. Al Andalus continues to be an inspiring area of study and he will investigate the possibilities of this area and other related topics for his Master's research. Devon is excited to work with Dr. Adnan Husain as his Supervisor and to learn more of the Muslim involvement in Sicily and the Aegean Sea.
Other historic loves include the First World War, the late Roman Empire, pre-modern China, and the Ottoman Empire.
