My research interests lie in the social and cultural history of late twentieth-century Canada, leftist grassroots activism, and transnational social movements. My M.A. research will build on these areas of interest by exploring the largely untold history of the Canadian-Latin America Solidarity Movement, which brought a wide variety of Canadians together in support of the leftist political movements in Cuba, Chile, and Nicaragua. I am particularly interested in how the pre-existing ideologies of the diverse actors involved in the movement—feminists, socialists, Christians, unionists, nationalists, and so forth—influenced their interpretations of the issues at stake in the Latin American conflicts, and, conversely, how these groups adopted for themselves the language and methodologies of Latin American Marxists. I also hope to explore the impact of the movement's transnationalism on issues of agency, cultural appropriation, and the idea of the nation. Dr. Ian McKay will supervise my research.
