Syed's area of study is the history of South Asians in Canada, particularly examining the legacy of British colonial rule in the Indian subcontinent and it's effects on South Asian migrants in the past and present. Under the supervision of Dr. Ishita Pande, he will analyse imperial discourse that encouraged migration within the empire against the realities of racial politics between colonies, and the subsequent inclusion or exclusion of South-Asian communities within the Canadian national construct. Through this, he hopes to better understand the effects of race, colonialism and identity formation within contemporary Canada.
