My area of research interest is American political history from roughly 1789-1815. Under the supervision of Professor Errington, I will take a closer look at the newspaper essays written by many of the leading national politicians of the period. These essays reveal a great deal about the development of the major political arguments of the time, the formation of what some consider to be the first American political parties and the attitudes of politicians at this time period towards each other and the average American citizen. I will also examine how the printing of these essays for public consumption affected, if at all, the perceptions and attitudes of the American people towards fostering a more democratic society and political system.
