My research deals primarily with Canadian cultural and diplomatic history during the Cold War era. More specifically, I am interested in the degree to which cultural exchanges were utilized by the Canadian state to win the "hearts and minds" of audiences behind the Iron Curtain and in the non-aligned "Third World." My dissertation will explore the institutional and policy aspects of Canada's cultural diplomacy initiatives, in addition to the kinds of performers, athletes, and artists that were recruited by the government to perform in various international venues.

I am also interested in the emergence of the welfare state in Canada, and the ways in which the Swedish welfare model helped shape the social democratic movement in post-1945 Canada.
