About

Matt received his Honors BA in History and Political Science from Huron University College in 2003 and his Master of Arts in History from The University of Western Ontario in 2004. His interests line in the history of international relations and the Canadian-American bilateral defence relationship. He studies how both Canada and the United States have worked together in the past to protect North America from external threats. He is particularly interested in how Canadian policy makers have sought to balance American demands that Canada contribute to the defence of the continent with the protection of Canadian sovereignty.

He is currently writing his Ph.D. Dissertation how different conceptions of the Canadian national interest held by different groups within the Canadian political establishment and armed forces interacted with the Canada-U.S. relationship in the development of the North American air defence system in the 1950s. He is working under the supervision of Professor Allan English and Professor Joel Sokolsky of the Royal Military College of Canada.
He is also interested in Canadian military, diplomatic and political history, the history of the Cold War and American history.
