Retirement and Residential Accommodation
Retirement homes and residential accommodations (senior-oriented apartments,
sometimes called "supportive housing") are privately owned and
operated, some by for-profit companies and others by municipal or non-profit
groups. Some are co-located with long-term care facilities, but
they are not regulated by the government and there are no regulated
standards for care (beyond those afforded by the Tenant Protection Act).
Many retirement homes and residential accommodations choose
to have themselves accredited by the Ontario Residential
Care Association (ORCA). This accreditation is voluntary, and lack
of ORCA accreditation does not indicate lesser quality.
Retirement homes or residential accommodations vary widely in terms of
services provided (such as onsite beauty salons, gardens, meeting rooms,
etc.) and the prices for these services. The size and type of rooms available
also varies greatly. Everything from shared rooms up to two-bedroom apartments
may be available. Visiting several possible locations to compare is highly
recommended.
Although some retirement homes and residential accommodations provide
nursing care, many do not. Reasonable independent mobility is a requirement
for entry to many homes. Supportive care, such as help with hygiene, laundry,
dressing and washing, and shopping may be available.
Residential accommodations may also offer government subsidized units
or rent-geared-to-income (RGI) accommodation. Tenants who qualify will
have their rent adjusted so that a maximum of 30% of monthly income is
spent on rent. Rent subsidies in Kingston are handled through the Social
Housing Registry at 362 Montreal Street (telephone: 613-546-2695 extension 4764). They have
an informative
brochure that can be downloaded from their web site.
