There are many community organizations and resources available to provide
valuable information and assistance for promoting the well-being of seniors.
This section of the guide offers a listing of local organizations and
resources, the services they provide, contact information.
Queen's Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
Queen's recognizes that caring for a loved one can be challenging for
both parties. The Employee Assistance Program is available to assist in
developing solutions and aims to promote and maintain the well-being of
all university employees and their families while respecting confidentiality
at all times. This program helps families to find the necessary resources
to address elder care needs, as well as other problems. EAP can help you
in anything from selecting an elder care option, finding proper foot care,
home support services, and many other needs.
Free, confidential counselling is provided by the Employee Assistance
Program. Counsellors are available on a 24-hour basis and can be contacted
by calling the following toll-free number: 1-800-387-4765 (English) or
1-800-361-5676 (French). More information about the program and the issues

Assistive Devices Rental
March of Dimes' Assistive Devices Program
The March of Dimes' Assistive Devices Program's priority is to provide funding for devices that will:
• Assist adults with disabilities that restrict their mobility and prevent them from living safely in their homes
• Enable discharge from a hospital or rehabilitation centre
• Help avoid job loss
• Support opportunities for participation in educational, developmental and community activities
Eligible applicants include: Ontario residents aged 19 years or older who requires assistive devices to compensate for a physical disability and who has financial need.
Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-term Care - Assistive Devices Program
The Assistive Devices Program (ADP) is an initiative of the Ontario Government to provide financial assistance for the purchase of basic assistive devices. For most equipment, the ADP will cover up to 75% of the cost. The ADP will also usually cover 100% of the cost of oxygen related equipment for seniors 65 years of age or older. Visit the website for more information regarding eligibility and the amount of coverage for individual devices.
Other Providers
Other commercial providers, such as Shopper's Drug Mart, offer equipment rentals. The YellowPages have listings of many other commercial providers.

Hospice Kingston's mission is to provide comfort and support to persons living with a life threatening illness and their families. Our volunteers provide respite help in the home. These dedicated compassionate individuals complete a 30-hour training program before being placed with a family.
The Day Program allows people with life-threatening illnesses to get out and socialize while simultaneously giving caregivers a break. A typical day includes a light snack, tea, coffee, and activities such as bridge or euchre, before sitting down for a hot lunch. We also offer transportation to and from appointments. We can help!
Seniors Association Kingston Region
The Seniors Association offers members a variety of recreational, educational and social activities for seniors with diverse interests with over 5,000 "seniors" of all ages. The Association's Centre is equipped with program rooms, a computer lab, a woodworking shop, a restaurant, a cafe, a full-size gymnasium, as well as a mini-gym. Over 100 different programs are offered a few of which include: art and language classes, keyboarding, computer instruction, monthly dances, and multicultural events. Various services include: medical drives, a frozen food program, counseling, expert advice, and foot care. The Seniors Association also offers one day, multi-day and extended trips to Ontario, Quebec and beyond to members and friends.
South East Community Care Access Centre (CCAC)
The South East Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) provides home and community-based health care and other personal care and support services. Ontario’s CCACs are the single point of access to long term care homes in Ontario, including for respite stays. Ontario’s CCACs are funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care through Local Health Integration Networks as such, a valid Health Card is required in order to qualify for service. CCACs also provide a comprehensive Information and Referral service – some of the services which are part of this referral program may have a cost associated with them. CCAC is available 7 days a week from 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. by calling 310-CCAC (2222).

Elder Abuse & Legal Aid
Council on Aging - Elder Abuse Prevention
The Elder Abuse Prevention Services is an established network of service providers with a committee of senior volunteers who are dedicated to educating seniors and the public about elder abuse. It is a standing committee of the Council on Aging. Their mandate is to increase awareness surrounding elder abuse and develop community initiatives in response to these issues.

Legal Aid Ontario Kingston
Legal Aid Ontario Kingston provides low-income people access to a range of legal services tailored to meet their legal needs.
Queen's Legal Aid
Queen's Law Students have worked to serve hundreds of clients in the Kingston community for over 35 years. This practical experience opportunity is supervised to ensure that all clients receive excellent service.
Queen's Legal Aid provides legal advice and representation to full-time students at Queen’s University and low-income area residents. Funding comes from Legal Aid Ontario, the Faculty of Law, and Queen's student activity fees. Queen's Legal Aid is located in room 406 in Macdonald Hall.
The Elder Law Clinic
Upper-Year law students under professional supervision from a Professor in the Faculty of Law who are also practicing lawyers offer legal services to older adults. Types of services provided are: drafting Wills and Powers of Attorney, age-related discrimination, problems with nursing and long term care and many more.

Foot Care
Seniors Association (Foot Care Clinic)
Qualified nurses with an Advanced Foot Care Certification provide services that include: specialty treatment for the diabetic foot, care and relief from corns and calluses, treatment of dry skin, foot care tips for overall health, education, etc. The Advanced Foot Care Certification means that these nurses have specific training around diabetic foot care and medications. Appointments are available throughout the week. DVA and private insurance accepted.
Victorian Order of Nurses (Foot care)
VON nurses and other health professionals at VON provide foot care for all ages from infants to seniors. Nurses provide assessment, care and advice for clients, including the elderly and people with diabetes, who have particular problems looking after their feet. Care includes clipping nails, treating corns, calluses, ingrown nails and thickened nails and preventative care as well as referral to other health professionals.

Providence Continuing Care Centre (PCCC) operates a geriatric assessment unit at St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital. The program is composed of a multi-disciplinary team of health professionals who evaluate seniors with complex health problems or recent declines in mobility, functional abilities, or cognition. Patients can be referred by doctors, other health care professionals, family members, or they can refer themselves. However, the family physician must be notified and approve the referral because he/she plays a key role in follow-up. Seniors without a family physician are welcome to contact St. Mary’s at the above number to discuss their options regarding geriatric assessment. Flags for referral include:
- recent decline in function
- more difficulty getting around
- recent falls, concern about medications
- recent change in ability to cope
- several recent admissions to hospital or visits to emergency or family physician
- unexplained change in memory or cognition
The goal of the assessment is to help improve independence and quality of life. Referrals may be made to other health care organizations who may be able to help. The assessment can be performed in hospital, at home, or at another place of residence.

The Kingston Frontenac Public Library offers books (including large-type and multilingual), films (in both cassette and DVD format), audio books, magazines, government publications, and musical recordings. They have 17 branches, which are listed on the website. The library catalogue is fully searchable from the Internet. The library also offers public access to computers connected to the Internet.
The library also operates a service to "Shut-ins", which is a monthly service for patrons who are unable to visit the library for reasons of illness or a disability. Staff consults with these patrons to determine the kinds of library material desired. Then, once a month volunteer drivers deliver the new items. Services include: quick, efficient sale of real estate, finding a new home, sorting, packing, moving, appraisal of belongings, cleaning/preparing your home for sale, shipping/managing extra assets and unpacking and set up in your new home. Their highly qualified team members are leaders in the senior relocation and transition industry. Respite Care
Complex Continuing Care Respite Program
Providence Continuing Care operates a Respite Care Program to provide relief to care givers of chronically ill people in the community. The program has 72 beds and primarily serves the Frontenac County. There are four respite beds at St. Mary's of the Lake to provide relief to families who are caring for a disabled or elderly relative at home who meets the admission criteria for complex continuing care. Except for emergencies, the bed must be pre-booked. The admission cannot exceed thirty-one days.
Hildegarde Centre and Day Away Program
These two programs are operated by Providence Continuing Care Centre. The Hildegarde Centre is for people aged 55 and over with physical or cognitive impairments, whereas the Day Away program is for people with Alzheimer Disease who require a secure environment.
Both programs are intended for seniors who live at home with caregivers. Activities include light physical exercise, social activities, mental stimulation and activities of daily living. Lunch and refreshments are served, pastoral care and church services are available, and transportation is provided to and from the program if necessary. An application including a medical examination must be carried out before joining the program. Users pay a small daily fee, which is adjusted based on income.

Providence Continuing Care Centre Respite Care Program

Umbrella Organizations
The following organizations can provide services and information relating to many topics.
Council on Aging
The Council on Aging (COA) is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of all seniors in the Kingston area. The COA works with other organizations to develop programs and pilot projects in order to help seniors and their caregivers.
The COA also organizes various workshops and presentations on issues such as elder abuse, safe and secure aging and accessibility to health care. Through the Peer Support volunteers, the COA provides support and information for those seniors whose financial, emotional and/or physical safety may be compromised.
The COA produces and distributes a wide range of educational materials about aging and seniors' issues available for the Kingston community.
Ontario Retirement Communities Association (ORCA)
ORCA is a voluntary, non-profit organization established in 1977 that sets professional operating standards, inspects, and accredits retirement residences in Ontario.
Not all retirement residences are an approved member of ORCA. Members of ORCA must meet and maintain standards for accreditation which pertain to the operational policies, procedures and staff education essential to fulfilling legislated obligations and the maintenance of a safe, comfortable living environment for residents. Only ORCA member residences are monitored to ensure they comply with industry standards. Anyone in Ontario can call the Complaint Response & Information Service (CRIS) toll-free hotline to get information about the care options available, or to get assistance resolving a complaint about any retirement residence in Ontario, not just ORCA members. The Province of Ontario provides funding assistance for the CRIS program. Visit the ORCA website to view tips on choosing a retirement residence and browse listings and photos of accredited retirement residences.
