An academic assistant is a part-time, non-student employee who generally assists a member of the academic staff and who supports academic activities related to a degree credit course or program. Academic assistants, including Tutors and Markers, perform duties such as preparation for tutorials and/or lab demonstrations, preparation of written and audio visual materials, instruction, leading discussions, supervising laboratories, grading exams and assignments, consulting with students, setting up experiments, conducting field trips and assisting with curriculum and course material development.

Postdoctoral Fellows (PDFs) are employees of the university who are completing a period of intensive research in their field following the completion of a doctoral degree. Individuals usually accept a Postdoctoral Fellowship for a limited period of time, normally for two or three years. The purpose of a Postdoctoral Fellow appointment is normally to strengthen one's publication record and CV, thereby building a reputation and enhancing one's chances of securing a more permanent faculty or research position.
