Special Olympics Coming to Queen’s

Queen’s will play a prominent role in the upcoming 2012 Special Olympics Provincial Games May 31-June 3rd .

“We are excited to welcome athletes and their family, friends and fans,” says Roxy Denniston-Stewart, Associate Dean, Student Affairs. “Queen’s is pleased to be part of such an exciting community event on campus.” “ It is a also a great opportunity for faculty, staff and students to get involved by volunteering to help out at the games.”

Special Olympics Provincial Games organizers selected Queen’s residences as the athletes’ village. The university will host basketball, bocce and power lifting competitions at various venues on campus and the closing ceremonies at the Athletics and Recreation Centre.

Over 1,000 athletes and coaches will attend the four-day event. The Spring Games and other Special Olympic Ontario events are designed to enrich the lives of people with intellectual disabilities through sport.

If you are interested in volunteering please visit the Special Olympics Ontario website for details on how to apply. Arrangements for time off (vacation, lieu time) to participate as a volunteer should be made directly with your supervisor with as much in advance notice as possible.
