University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP)

UHIP is the university health insurance plan in effect at Ontario universities. The plan provides medical coverage comparable to that received by Ontario residents.

UHIP is mandatory for:

  • International faculty, staff. visitors and their dependents who are staying longer than three weeks
  • Canadians (and dependents) while awaiting provincial health care coverage after prolonged absences from Ontario (more than 212 days in any 12 month period)

How to enroll and pay for UHIP

Please contact a member of the Human Resources Client Services Team (CST) to set up a meeting.

  • An interpreter can be made available if requested before your meeting.
  • The premium (fee) payable depends how many people enroll, and for how long. Refer to the premium table on the UHIP website to determine your premium.
  • Payments may be made by personal cheque, salary deduction or cash. Premiums may be paid by the hiring department.

Fines for late enrolment:

Employees who enrol late must pay premiums retroactive to their employment start date. If you enrol your family members more than 30 days after they arrive in Canada, you must pay a late application fee of $500, PLUS premium retroactive to your employment start date.

UHIP Activation/Duration

Coverage under the plan starts on the date you and your family arrive in Canada, but not earlier than the 10th day of the month before the month in which your university employment begins. Minimum enrolment is usually three months. It may be longer for employees who arrived in another province before coming to Ontario. UHIP enrolment usually ends on the same day as the work permit expiry date or upon confirmation of enrolment in the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). Employees may extend coverage for up to 20 days after their work permit expires to allow for coverage while preparing to leave Canada.

Health Coverage after UHIP - the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP)

After a three month waiting period, you may be eligible for coverage under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). To be eligible, you must be physically present in Ontario for 153 days of the first 183 days after the three month waiting period. If you are on a work permit, it must be valid for at least 6 months. You must also have a formal agreement to work full-time for an employer in Ontario.

For application forms, where to apply, and details on eligibility please go to the OHIP website.

Queen's University accepts no responsibility for uninsured medical or hospital expenses incurred by employees or their dependents?
