Government Benefits & Programs

Canadian Pension Plan (CPP)

Offered to those who worked and contributed to CPP. You do not need to stop working or reduce your earnings to start your CPP. Contributions to CPP are mandatory on employment income for all employees under age 65, and voluntary for employees age 65-71. Between 65-70, contributions to CPP will be deducted from employment regardless of whether or not you are receiving CPP payments, unless you elect to stop contributing by completing Form CPT30. Form CPT30 must be sent to Payroll Services and Canada Revenue Agency.

Old Age Security (OAS) Benefit

Available at age 65 if you have met the residency requirements. OAS is not based on employment history. Amount of OAS is based on net world income, and payable whether or not you to continue to work.

Ontario Drug Benefit Program

The Ontario Drug Benefit program is for Ontario residents only and prescriptions must be filled in an Ontario pharmacy to be covered. Make sure your Ontario health card is valid (for example, it hasn’t expired). Your pharmacist will need your health card to confirm your eligibility for the Ontario Drug Benefit program.  If you are a resident of Ontario you will automatically join the Ontario Drug Benefit program on the first day of the month after you turn 65.

Employment Insurance

The current Employment Insurance regulations require continued premium deductions from salary until retirement.
