Reading any news story on sexual harassment immediately underscores the complexity of what is a very emotionally charged issue. Just as it has in the workplace, this issue has prompted the education community to ask itself:

  • What is sexual harassment?
  • How does it manifest itself within an educational institution?
  • What are its legal, social and financial implications?
  • How can it be prevented?
  • How can it be remedied?
  • What obligations does an institution have toward an alleged harasser and to the victim?
  • Does the analysis of an incident depend on the identity of the parties involved (e.g. student, faculty or staff member)?

Objective (back to top)

The objective of Online Training: Sexual Harassment is to provide the basic knowledge and skills required to prevent and respond to incidents of sexual harassment that occur within academic environments.

The following modules attempt to answer the above questions by:

  • providing a comprehensive definition of sexual harassment;
  • outlining what the law says about the duty to prevent and address the issue;
  • suggesting strategies for preventative and remedial action at the individual and institutional levels; and
  • outlining the potential consequences of not taking action.

The modules use interactive information and case studies to help you recognize situations in which sexual harassment is occuring, and to develop an understanding of the issue such that you are better able to both protect your rights and meet your legal obligations.

Scope {back to top}

Once you have completed the modules, you will gained some basic knowledge about sexual harassment and how to address it. We strongly encourage you to seek out other resources appropriate to your level of responsibility within the institution:administrators, managers, supervisors, professors and students all have varying levels of responsibilities to prevent and address incidents of harassment. This on-line module cannot replace a training session that is tailored to meet your or your unit's specific needs, neither can it replace the advice or consultation with a knowledgeable human rights professional.

It is important to remember that other forms of harassment based on characteristics such as race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, disability, age and sexual orientation, and gender identity are also illegal and destructive in the work, living or study environments. Much of the information about sexual harassment that you will find in the module will similarly apply to other forms of harassment.

Format{back to top}

Online Training: Sexual Harassment is made up of three modules.

  1. Questionnaire outlines the principles of sexual harassment.
  2. Case Studies presents three scenarios illustrating the nature, manifestations and management of sexual harassment.
  3. Final Quiz assesses your knowledge of the aforementioned principles.

After completing and submitting all three modules, you will receive your mark and the correct answers to the questions. If you wish to receive a printable certificate of successful completion, you must receive an average of at least 90% on the three modules.
