Tile C9

"Golden Daughter"

Jennifer Zhang, Queen's student

Artist's Biography

My name is Jennifer, a life sciences undergraduate student who enjoys dabbling in art in my spare time.

Artist's Statement

Upon hearing of the 2012 Delhi gang rape incident in India, I wanted to paint a strong Indian woman. When I saw tile C9, a bright square with a bold flowing streak, I envisioned a woman emerging from the background in rich, draping garb. My piece depicts a woman all in orange, a colour of passion, determination, and warmth, framed by the black edge of her scarf blowing in the wind. I wanted to draw a face looking right at the viewer, representing all the daughters of the world.
