I was born in the south of Holland, in Maastricht, and emigrated to Canada when I was 7 years old. Although we were destined for Edmonton, we settled in Toronto. I share my creative spirit with my father Jules, who still paints today at 89, and with my son Stephen who has shown his sensitive creativity in many ways including musically.
From a young age, I have been expressing my creative spirit in visual art.
I have used many mediums including pencil, acrylics, oils, and am particularly interested in abstract painting and portraiture. I am also experimenting with cement as ground for paintings and for sculptures.
I have taken courses from:
Janet Ferguson (Painting with Oils)
Shirley Miller (Watercolour)
Ben Darrah (Abstraction with Acrylics)
Connie Morris (Mixed Media Acrylic Workshop)
Debbie Ottman-Smith (Everybody Needs a Challenge)
Andrea Mossop (Painting the Human Form)
Annette Blady-Van Mil (Mixed Media Acrylics).
Daniel Hughes (Portrait Painting).
I have been a member of Bath Artisans since 1998 and am taking on the leadership role starting in January, 2011. I am also a member of the Kingston Portrait and Figure Artists Group with Joanne Gervais. This group meets once a week and uses live models for life drawing practice.
I am deeply moved by the following quote by Vincent Van Gogh. "If you hear a voice within you saying, 'You are not a painter,' then by all means paint…and that voice will be silenced " This reaches the core of my being and says that there is no wrong way to express myself, the only mistake is not doing so.
The image I did for Woman Recreated 2nd call is symbolic of reaching my full potential, feeling comfortable in my own skin and enjoying life. I call it "Flight".
