Trans Accessibility Project:
Resources

Locating Resources and Allies

Resources on transgender issues have been limited until recently, however, they are now developing at a rapid rate. We have listed a variety of types of resources below including print, audio-visual, organizations and support groups; however, you will need to investigate those available in your own region. If you are located in a large urban centre, you will likely have access to established organizations and support groups. If you are in a rural area, resources may be more limited and the internet may prove to be one of your best sources of information. Keep in mind that there are often opportunities at conferences and workshops to gather information and develop alliances.

It is important to find allies and to build coalitions in your community. If available, a local lesbian, gay, bisexual organization or HIV/AIDS organization may offer support and information for transgendered people. You can also try contacting a Human Rights Commission, if nearby, for information and support. If you have a university campus in your area, there may be staff who are researching this area, a human rights or equity office working on accessibility on campus, or transgendered people involved with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender organization.

In general, the more recent publications listed below will likely be most helpful. Many of these books can be ordered from the International Foundation for Gender Education (see IFGE, listed in Organizations).
