It is with great sadness that that Institute of Intergovernmental Relations announces the passing of a former Institute Director Richard Simeon.
Richard, a professor of Political Studies at Queen's University for many years, served as Director of the Institute of Intergovernmental Relations (1976-83) and Director of the School of Public Administration (1985-91). He was centrally involved in the development of the concept for a new Institute of Policy Studies at Queen's in the mid-80s and the establishment of the School of Policy Studies in 1987.
Richard held visitorships at a number of universities, both in Canada and abroad, throughout his career, as well as numerous leadership roles outside the academy. He was Research Coordinator (Institutions) for the Royal Commission on the Economic Union and Canada's Development Prospects (the Macdonald Commission, 1983-85) and served as Vice-Chair of the Ontario Law Reform Commission (1989-95). In 1991, he joined Political Science Department at the University of Toronto.
Richard was a prolific scholar, and his publications on Canadian politics and public policy, federalism, intergovernmental relations and Canada-US relations remain required reading for undergraduate and graduate students across the country and beyond.
A celebration of Richard's life will be held December 7, 2013, 1-4 p.m., Campbell Conference Centre, Munk School, 1 Devonshire Place, University of Toronto.
