The Dunin-Deshpande Queen's Innovation Centre (DDQIC) is hiring a Makerspace Development Director for the summer of 2017. The Director will be involved in all aspects of running SparQ Studios. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing the makerspace, implementing its development plans and supporting summer entrepreneurship programs as well as student venture prototyping. The job will span all 18 weeks of summer beginning May 1st, 2017.

You will develop the following skills in this position:

1) Project management (Marketing, Finance, Human Resources) – oversee a team of volunteers and spearhead a series of events related to the makerspace throughout the summer all the while managing the makerspace budget, website, and public image across Canada.
2) Research – learn about desktop manufacturing technologies and eventually be comfortable troubleshooting equipment through a hands on understanding of resources available in the makerspace.
3) Leadership – work in a dynamic team atmosphere interacting with students from multiple faculties including engineering, commerce, arts and science.
4) Professional conduct – become confident in presenting to professionals through tours, pitches and networking sessions with potential investors and partners of the makerspace​.
5) Business strategy – learn how to successfully launch a business by taking part in the two week accelerated entrepreneurial skills development portion of the Queen's Innovation Connector Summer Initiative (QICSI) program.

What are the job requirements?

A background in any faculty is acceptable, so long as the candidate shows a passion for entrepreneurship and a willingness to learn.

  • Past and continuing involvement with SparQ Studios is preferred.
  • Must be willing to direct the makerspace through the 2017-2018 year.
  • Entrepreneurial minded individual who is able to execute ideas quickly and efficiently.
  • Passionate about the maker movement and makerspaces.
  • Ambitious individual who is quick to adapt implement new ideas.
  • Knowledge in desktop manufacturing techniques is an asset.
